Why You Can’t Be Afraid Of Being Disliked

Be true to yourself – there will always be haters

No matter what you say or do, some people still won’t like you.

Ten years ago, someone came up to me out of nowhere (unsolicited) and said:

“You know, when we first met, I didn’t like your passion or your positive, cheerful attitude. I thought it was fake, annoying, a little ‘too much,’ but now I realize it’s just who you are… I guess it kind of grew on me.”

More recently, someone else shared the same sentiment:

“At first, your enthusiasm and eagerness rubbed me the wrong way. I thought you asked too many questions. But after I got to know you, you’re actually quite alright. I guess you’re just naturally happy.”

No matter what you say or do, some people still won’t like you.

Sure, it stings. No one likes to hear that they were ever disliked, especially not to your face from the person who thought it themselves. At least these people actually came around. Most would never admit it. They find me annoying at best and unbearable at worst.

I get it. I am loud. I laugh easily, I ask follow-up questions, and I’m awkward sometimes. I take in every little detail in the present moment. I put myself out there. I’m extroverted, high-energy, tuned in, and aware.

Picture me at parties: I’m either dancing, engaged in a story, or taking it all in. Almost always having fun.

Stand up for your values and be your authentic self, even if it’s scary or difficult or pisses someone off. You will earn self-respect, and you’ll sleep better at night.

If you piss someone off just by minding your business and living your truth, I assure you: you’re doing it right

Besides, you can’t win them all. You were never meant to.

You’ll weed out the kin from the haters, and that’s easier on you.

Whether you stand up for your values or simply be your whole self, do so with courage and confidence. If someone gets mad about it, let them.

  1. This is a great reminder to forget the things we can’t control, with how people think of us being one of them. When I was a hairdresser, we used to have this saying: Even the best hairdressers have their haters, and the worst hairdressers their fans.

So no reason to worry, because we’ll always find our people. Thanks for this post!

    1. Thanks for validating the sentiment in this post! I realized today that you really can’t control what people see in you because in the end, it’s simply what they see (or choose not to see) in themselves that they’re projecting onto you.

Love the saying from your past life as a hairdresser!
